Frequently Asked Questions

A few of the questions families most often raise when deciding whether to work with us. If yours isn’t here, we’d welcome the conversation.

WORKING TOGETHER

What does becoming a client actually look like?

It begins with a conversation. Our first meeting is spent getting to know you — your family, your goals, and what’s prompting you to seek advice — with no cost or obligation on either side. From there we outline a plan, agree on how we’ll work together, and only move forward once you’re confident it’s the right fit. We may also perform an analysis of your current portfolio and situation at no charge — it shows you where you are today and the gaps and holes that need to be filled to complete your goals and dreams.

Who do you work with — is there a minimum?

Our strategies work best for individuals and families with $1 million or more in investable assets. We are also committed to helping those who do not meet that number. More than any dollar figure, the clients who get the most from us want a long-term relationship and a coordinated approach to their wealth, not a single transaction. If you’re unsure whether we’re a fit, a short call is the easiest way to find out.

How often will we meet and stay in touch?

We typically meet quarterly or semi-annually, depending on your situation and needs, and more often around major decisions or life events. Between meetings you can reach us directly by phone or email — you’ll always know exactly who you’re speaking with.

What happens to my plan if something happens to my advisor?

Your plan doesn’t rest on one person. We have a succession plan in place for business continuity, so you won’t skip a beat with your plan. We document your situation thoroughly so that, whatever happens, your family and your plan are looked after without  interruption.

Are you a fiduciary?

Yes, I am a fiduciary. I’m held to a fiduciary standard which legally requires me to act in your best interest and disclose any potential conflicts of interest.

FEES & TRANSPARENCY

How are you compensated?

We are primarily fee-based advisors, which helps keep our guidance aligned with your interests. In some situations, a commission-based strategy may make more sense for you as the investor — when that’s the case, we’ll show you both sides and let you make the decision. Either way, we’ll walk you through exactly how we’re paid before you move forward.

What will I actually pay — are there hidden costs?

You’ll see your advisory fee stated plainly, and we’ll also explain the underlying costs of the investments we use — things like fund expenses — so you understand the full picture. We don’t believe in surprises.

YOUR INVESTMENTS

How do you build and manage my portfolio?

We build your portfolio around your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for risk — not a one-size-fits-all model. In practice that means a diversified mix across asset classes, reviewed and rebalanced as markets and your life change.

How do you manage risk, especially in down markets?

Risk management is built into your plan from the start, not bolted on during a downturn. We diversify, keep an appropriate share of your portfolio liquid for near-term needs, and stress-test your plan against difficult markets so you’re prepared rather than reactive. No one can prevent markets from falling, but a sound plan is designed to weather them.

Do you offer alternatives or private investments?

For qualified clients and accredited investors, we offer one of the most comprehensive and robust selections of strategies and opportunities — such as private equity, oil and gas, tax optimization, private credit, and real estate — where they fit your goals and risk profile.

How will I know how my investments are doing?

You’ll have secure online access and regular statements showing your holdings, performance, and progress toward your goals, and we’ll review it together at each meeting in plain language. We report performance net of fees and against benchmarks that are relevant to your plan.

PLANNING & LEGACY

Do you help with tax planning?

Yes — tax optimization is central to how we manage your money. We coordinate your investments with your tax picture using approaches like asset location, tax-loss harvesting, and thoughtful withdrawal sequencing to help you keep more of what you earn. We enjoy working directly with your CPA, and in many cases we bring tax optimization strategies to your tax preparer.

Can you help me transfer wealth to my family?

We believe helping you plan your legacy is one of our most important tasks. We have the strategies and knowledge to help you accomplish what you want for your family for generations. We help you think through how your wealth passes to the people and causes you care about, coordinating your investment plan with your estate documents, trusts, and beneficiary designations — working alongside your estate attorney rather than replacing them, so your plan and your legal documents tell the same story.

Will you coordinate with my accountant and attorney?

Absolutely. We see ourselves as the hub of your financial life, working closely with your accountant, attorney, and other advisors so nothing falls through the cracks. With your permission, we’ll coordinate with them directly.

Can you help with charitable giving?

Yes. Whether you’re giving now or building a lasting legacy, we can help you give tax-efficiently through tools like donor-advised funds, appreciated securities, or charitable trusts, aligned with your broader plan. We offer strategies to help your favorite charities while optimizing your tax situation and leaving a lasting legacy.

Still have a question? If something on your mind isn’t covered here, let’s talk it through — there’s no obligation, just a conversation.
